How do I know that I have a cavity?

The most common symptom is temperature sensitivity. Eating sweets is the most common cause of cavities and tooth sensitivity. If you notice dark staining or food frequently getting caught are also signs of cavities.

How can I make my teeth look better?

Beyond good brushing and flossing habits, bleaching is the most conservative approach to a whiter smile. 

My child has crooked teeth. When should we start with orthodontics?

Every child has unique and complicated skeletal development. The Dentist will guide this process. 

I’m 60 years old. Would braces help me straighten my teeth?

Yes. Straight teeth are easy to clean, especially for the hygienist. Also, clean teeth don’t incur bone loss and cause inflamed gums. Straight teeth make everyone look younger, especially white straight teeth!

How can I stop gum recession?

Gum recession is caused by many factors – brushing too hard, grinding/clenching teeth, and acid reflux. Dr. Tim believes the general practitioner can run tests for sleep apnea, and acid reflux.

How long will each visit take?

Of course times will vary. Usually a new patient visit takes about an hour and a half. Depending on whether you need fillings, crowns, or other work, it could take a bit longer. We always let you know how long we estimate each procedure will take and allow you to make informed decisions. 

At what age should children begin seeing a dentist?

We recommend starting between 2 and 3 years old, usually sitting on a parent’s lap. 

When should children begin brushing their teeth?

As soon as they erupt (when you can see them)

When should kids brush their teeth by themselves?

Begin instilling proper brushing habits immediately when teeth erupt. We suggest following up after they brush to be sure every tooth has been cleaned. 

Should children try to remove their loose teeth?

Yes. As soon as they are ready to come out. 

Why is my tooth sensitive after seeing the dentist?

Anesthetics can cause some discomfort, as well as when the surrounding tissue and jaw bone incur inflammatory response (swelling)

Do Implants last forever?

Yes. That said, all teeth & implants require proper maintenance. Well maintained implants will last your entire life.

Do medications cause dry mouth?

Yes. Heart meds , diabetes, diuretics, anti-depressants, cholesterol meds, and smoking can cause dry mouth. 

Why is dry mouth bad for teeth?

The oral cavity has over 350 bacteria living together. When the mouth becomes dry, good bacteria die and bad bacteria multiply. This causes decay to teeth and bone loss. The #1 cause of tooth loss is bone loss!

I am very scared of needles, what are my options?

The Dr. can prescribe an anti-anxiety pill to relax you for any appointment.

What if I can’t afford Implants?

Removable bridges work well, as well as snap on teeth.

I hate my CPAP. What are my options?

Dr. Tim Has been treating sleep apnea/ anti snoring for ten years. The mandibular (lower jaw) advancement orthotic is very popular.

I snore. What are my options?

The mandibular advancement orthotic saves lives (and marriages)

My wife/husband snores. Can she use the anti snoring device?

Yes many women sleep better with the orthotic.

What kind of fillings do you use?

We use a composite resin material.

How long should fillings last?

Fillings usually last 6 or 7 years.

How long do crowns last?

Crowns can last 15 years if well maintained.

Why do fillings need to be replaced?

A healthy diet can stress filling materials on back teeth (molars). Wine,  sodas, and sugary drinks like gatorade can all effect the areas where fillings and teeth meet.

I have TMJ. How can you help?

Temporal Mandibular Disorder (TMJ) is caused by many factors – medications, sleep apnea, stress and poor diet to name a few. Quick relief is usually possible when we are able to determine the cause of your discomfort. 

Can I get an appointment on the weekend or evenings?

No weekend appointments are available. Late appointments are however available during the week.
